My Thoughts on SocialCam

I’ve been playing with SocialCam, a neat little app for Android and iOS devices. It’s quite neat. JustinTV, it’s creator, has made it free and can it be found in the Apple App Store and the Android Market.

I can see how this can be dangerous, especially if you’re out at a club and have had a little too much to drink. But to be honest the benefits out number the disadvantages. I wish they would enable other services other than Facebook for both logging in and sharing. But I’m sure that will come.

Below is a video I did using it.

Apple Sues Amazon Over The Term “App Store”

First off… ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Apple is apparently suing Amazon over the latter’s use of Appstore for its new Android application store. This is where copyright law has gone too far. The word “Appstore” store is synonymous with all apps for mobile devices. The fact that Google called their “App Store” a market doesn’t mean the word “App Store” should be copyrighted.

Apple is suing Amazon.com for trademark infringement and unfair competition over its use of the term “App Store.” The complaint, filed in US District Court for the Northern California District on Friday, asks that Amazon be ordered to stop using “Appstore” to refer to its Google Android Market alternative, set to launch Tuesday.

“Amazon has begun improperly using Apple’s App Store mark in connection with Amazon’s mobile software developer program,” Apple wrote in its complaint. Amazon hinted at its intentions to launch its own service to sell apps for the Android platform, and in January of this year told developers to begin submitting apps for what it calls the Amazon Appstore for Android.

Apple since asked Amazon to stop calling its store an “Appstore” three times, according to the lawsuit. “We’ve asked Amazon not to copy the App Store name because it will confuse and mislead customers,” Apple spokesperson Kristin Huguet told Bloomberg News.

Apple filed for a trademark on the term App Store in 2008, and after an initial rejection and an appeal by Apple, it was approved in early 2010. Microsoft filed an objection in July 2010 on the grounds that the term was too generic, and later asked the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board to issue a summary judgment denying Apple’s trademark application.

Confusion? What confusion? I see people who have a iPhone, iPad, iPod knowing that they need to use iTunes to get their apps. If they go to the Amazon app store they will see that those programs are for Android not iOS.

Come on apple. Get off your high-horse and suck it up. There are more players in the game. Get over yourself. There is NO CONFUSION.

App Review: Fruit Ninja for Android

Fruit Ninja for Android

This is one addicting game.

Originally on the iPhone. Fruit Ninja is a fun time-wasting game and is now on Android. At a cost of AU 1.17 (at the time of this review it was the same as $1.17) it is an inexpensive game perfect for killing sometime during the day or unwinding at night.

Gina Trapani’s First Android App – ToDo.Txt Touch Is Great But Needs A Few Things

I’m a huge fan of Gina Trapani. She is the founding editor of one of my favorite blogs, Lifehacker, a co-host on one of my favorite podcasts This Week in Google and above all an amazing open source coder and advocate. She is also the the author of Upgrade Your Life: The Lifehacker Guide to Working Smarter, Faster, Better, a fantastic book about how to streamline and hack your life to become more efficient and get more done. Recently she developed her first Android app called Todo.Txt Touch. It is a mobile version of her famed Todo.Txt command line to do list program for the computer. Now this is definitely a geeky app but it’s potential is great. It has many of the same GTD features that SaaS services like RememberTheMilk.com, but has but with more potential (in my humble opinion).

The iPhone Won’t Kill The Verizon Network

Robert Scoble (@Scobleizer)  made a good point on Twitter tonight:

Those who say Verizon’s network will suck after iPhones move over simply aren’t facing reality: Android has more phones in USA than iPhones.

And you know something he’s right.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread – iPhone Users Shutup! We’ve Caught Up!

Google's Android OS Version 2.3 Gingerbread Is The Best YetI hate how smug many of my iPhone-using friends are about their phone. To them, there’s nothing is better than an Apple iPhone. Even the antenna issue was just a slight bug and didn’t keep many of them from upgrading to the iPhone 4. But with the release of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, I think many of them are going to see the Android OS in a whole new light.
